From nature - Thoughts

1. Waiting for nature

Artists always search for and extract instantaneous moments of infinite changes in nature. The aesthetic works of artists are not pegged by one direction and does not prove any physical outcome. However, through the time the artists’ works evolve into various forms. For instance, works share the changes of nature as the records of their own thoughts by using their own orders and analysis. Furthermore, the works are continuously experimented in meaning of developing the initial stage. Huh-Gang’s first theme, therefore, is the waiting of nature’s moment. Huh-Gang displays his moment of nature on the aluminium board and waits for his own nature as the phenomenon created by hydrochloric acid decay.  The artist conveys his emotion through detailed images of nature created by halftones on the decayed board and the etching technique.  Such aquatint of Huh-Gang reflects the ideal world of nihilism, which is taught by the Chinese Taoist (道家), and also expresses his own nature that overcomes time and the universe.

2. Engraving nature

What does nature mean to artists? Nature is a physical norm and ideal. It is one of the primary subjects and the foundation of endless beauty. Not only do artists’ imaginations display artistic or aesthetic expressions but also they embody the life itself. The second theme of Huh-Gang, “Engraving nature”, illustrates and concentrates on the secrets of nature. He seeks to find the secrets of life through the images of plants.  Through complicated, yet systematical continuum of plant images enable the artist to pursuits the everlasting and continuous rhythm of living soul. Huh-Gang’s artistic terminology is not a generic performance but a fundamental analysis of plastic art.  Moreover, the words of the artist allow us to find both artistic and philosophical root of nature. Hence, Huh-Gang’s expressions are more of nature than sculptures.

허강은 1984년경부터 자연미술가그룹 야투에 참여하여왔다. 그리고 유럽의 여러  나라에서 자연미술을 발표하는 등 지금도 활발하게 발표하고 있다. 그는 늘 자신의 작품에 “자연으로부터”라는 제목을 접두사처럼 사용해왔다. 우리는 이 말에서 그의 미학이 자연으로 비롯된다는 것을 쉽게 알아차릴 수 있다. 그렇다. 그의 작품들은 모두 자연으로부터 출발한다. 이 말에는 어떠한 가식도 숨김도 은유도 존재하지 않는다. 오히려 그렇기 때문에 그의 말의 힘이 더 큰 것일지도 모른다. 자연으로 비롯되었다는 것의 힘. 자연은 보이는 것에서 보이지 않는 것까지 무한의 어떤 것이다. 그러므로 ‘자연으로부터’ 시작되었다는 것은 어쩌면 영원한 화두이다.(중략)

날개의 시작은 나무 밑동처럼 완고하게 시작된다. 하나에서 발현된 선의 가지들이 여러 갈래로 뻗어가면서 날개의 창을 이루기 시작한다. 굳게 뻗으며 상승하는 선들과 완만하게 휘어지면서 마치 나뭇가지들이 분화하듯 번져나가는 곡면들, 날개의 선들은 연못에 에두른 나무들과 비교되면서 자연의 성장 비밀을 드러낸다. 하나의 선이 둘, 셋, 넷의 선으로 나뉘고 다시그것들이 또 둘, 셋, 넷으로 나뉘어 큰 형상을 이루는 자연의 조화를 우리는 그 조화의 틈과 사이를 통해 자연을 본다. 아무것도 아닌 듯이 높다랗게 서 있는 날개의 형상일 뿐이지만, 그사이를 보는 우리는 경이로운 자연의 질서를 은연 중 받아들일 게 분명하다. 코스모스(질서)와 카오스(혼돈)의 둘이 아니라 카오스모스의 하나를 말한다. 허강은 잠자리 날개하나에서 바로 그 하나의 카오스모스를 발견했던 것이 아닐까?
