디자이너는 상상의 세계를 구현할 수 있는 자기만의 디자인 요소를 선택한다. 이번 전시에서 ‘뜨개(Knits)'는 섬유미술가 김혜란이 선택한 새로운 디자인 요소다. 하나의 실이 시작과 끝을 이루는 뜨개는 몇 번이고 되풀어 새 직물을 만들 수 있는 매력과 생태적 지속가능성을 지니고 있으며, 실 고리에 고리가 반복적으로 연결되는 과정을 통해 형성되는 유연함과 탄력은 그 어떤 배타적 미적 경계마저 포용하는 관대함을 보인다. 뜨개의 메커니즘과 결과로서의 구조는 김혜란이 지금까지 바느질과 바늘땀의 미적 형식과 상징을 연구했던 것과 맥을 같이 한다. 즉 뜨개는 특별한 기술이나 특별한 재료가 아닌 사람을 위해 근근자자(勤勤孜孜)하는 태도의 반영이라고 볼 수 있다.
이러한 뜨개의 조직(structure), 색상(color), 크기(scale)라는 요소는 그것을 어떻게 변용할 것인가에 따라 디자이너의 심상을 표현할 수 있는 기제로서 충분하다. 거기에 시간(time)과 인간(human)은 이 모든 것을 가능케 하는 축복이라고 할 수 있다.

A designer chooses his or her own design elements to describe an imaginary world. In this exhibition, Kim Hye Ran, a textile artist chose 'Knits' as a new design element. Knitting, completed by only one tread, is impressive to create a new fabric by unweaving and recycling a thread and shows ecological sustainability. It also shows leniency to embrace exclusive aesthetic boundary with flexibility and elasticity formed by a process to connect threads. The mechanism and structure of knitting is related to Kim Hye Ran's studies on aesthetic form and symbols of stitches. That is, knitting is not a specific technique or material but reflects in an attitude to be industrious and sincere for human.
The structure, color and scale of knitting is sufficient to express the designer's imagery according to how to change them. Then, ‘time’ and ‘human’ are a bliss to make everything come true.
