The mountains were created with verve, and the artist took a path of passion

Artists have long been inspired by mountains. Since the Romanticism of the 19th century, the mountains depicted in the background mainly took a central post in the canvas. Many artists often portrayed Mother Nature as an object of the sublime as they look down from a high mountain. However, when they realize that the mountains are not transcendental and everlasting but appear as the complex images derived from their historical and social individual experience, nature becomes tied down by the artists. Just as poetry needs to be emancipated from grammar, a painting needs to escape from the imitation of nature. Consequently, the artists represent the world in harmony between line and color.

If art has the function to lead us to a reality that which we cannot approach without cognitive reasoning and empathy, we cannot share empathy with the painting without having had a similar experience in nature. With this we ask for a special point, where pure modernist abstraction with a maximized inner autonomy meets figuration allowed for visual perception.

The mountains that Kim Min-sun depicts are close to the archetypal images. What we have to take note of here are the formal elements such as form and line and the theme of the mountain. In the mountains that she showcases the concrete individual factors are abbreviated with concise form and condensed color, implying archetypal images; nevertheless, the mountains do not lose their intrinsic form. In her painting the mountains do not lose their identity; thus, creating a neat scene through the moderate use of form and color. A simplified representation of objects in painting is like empty words. Ripe flowers blossoming in a field, a mountain ridge clothed in azaleas, and a whole mountain glowing with autumn foliage pay a quiet respect to nature through moderation without shouting.

This moderate expression of her scene is possible with the intervention of lines separating the inside from the outside and preventing the spread of such elements. The line is the most significant element we have to take notice in her painting. Kim’s painting reminds me of geological faults, probably because of the lines overlapping and shaping mountains. I think this aspect is key to the understanding of her work. In fact, faults and mountains are results of tremendous geological strength.

Mountains are engendered with the split and clash of tectonic plates. Such crustal movements bring forth very interesting results. Energy derived from the clash of the plates, which threaten mankind by causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, paradoxically assumed the role of evolving human civilization by moving minerals from the depth of the earth to a minable area. What does the fact that the 11 cradles of human civilization, among 13, are found on fault lines mean?

We are, at times, more interested in an artist’s life than his art itself. That is why the artist who is profoundly inspired by his experience in life meets aesthetic truth in a process of raising such experience to the level of art. Beethoven’s music and Van Gogh’s paintings would not be as loved and appreciated if their creators hadn’t experienced and conveyed those inner agonies that they had suffered. Kim Min-sun underwent some loss in her life after closing her business that was like her alter ego. Her passion for painting has erupted from that rupture like lava. As energy, necessary for mankind, is supplied through the enormous cracks of the earth’s fault lines, each individual’s fault line serves momentum to beautify and enrich his life. The deeper the fault line is, the hotter the energy that erupts. The power of art enables us to overcome desperation, raising it to passion.

Asked why she paints mountains, Kim replies that she feels communion with the mountains as in her mother’s bosom, adding that, she feels her body and mind are healed with the mountains’warmth. A mountain begins embracing life after the heat derived from crustal movement cools down. Isn’t the mountain’s warmth and healing power a gift that the earth’s underlying energy presents to humans? One point I’d like to add here is the fact that the one who discovered that a mountain is created through the uplifting and sedimentation of the surface of the earth was not a scientist but Leonardo Da Vinci. This shows that an artist can penetrate the secret of nature through his intuition.

I mentioned above that moderation in the use of form and color is like empty words. Serenity in Kim’s work enables us to have a special experience of sensing nature as it is, departing from the daily perspective that confines us. The mountains applied with monochrome colors are probably nothing but the shadows of her visual perception.

Empty repletion is ample like the bosom of nature. Paul Klee stated that "The power of an artwork is the power of the land,"which means art should have the force growing and healing life. Kim invites us to the mountain she creates after generating the cracks or the paths with lines rather than showcasing the power of the land. The lines depicting the mountain ridges become the paths, and we meet a mountain, if we take on the paths after passing the valleys. The more we walk, the wider the world becomes and the higher the mountain becomes.

Likewise, Kim’s mountain is the world where silence and aspiration coexist. The mountain rising up from the earth’s strata thus resembles the artist, or that may be how it appears to our own lives with its innate artistic driving force.
