Yoo Tae Joon(Ray Kim)

- Four Gracious Plant Paintings, Traditional Korean Landscape Painting Reborn as Photography

Photos by Yoo Tae-Joon (Ray Kim) are like traditional paintings. Photograph yearned for art (painting) at first like pictorial photography.  Painting like photograph and photograph like painting have flourished without division among media. So-called pictorial photography belongs to it. He shows traditional Korean landscape painting and Four Gracious Plant painting of the Joseon Dynasty through the photograph.  He photographed them using natural landscape, pine trees, stone, Japanese apricot flower (Maehwa) and bamboo and his methodology was very unique.  He highlighted lines, omitted the remaining drastically and showed them like painting drawn with Chinese ink.  He expressed the colors of Chinese ink and light-colored painting with light, highlighted the form of line in traditional painting, showed the essential characteristics of theme and borrowed ink-and-wash painting of Zen sect techniques".  Expression of lines and light and shade shown in images was attributed to particles unlike that of light and shadow of ink-and-wash painting using a series of tones and to photographic ‘matiere’ close to the plane.

This photograph gives feeling that nature and plants exposed to backlight approach us dazzlingly.  He creates the effects like ink-and-wash painting through long exposure and tone control using light and shadow of Indian ink on Chinese drawing paper. So it gives us an illusion like encountering traditional oriental painting. His photograph creates irony.  His photography gives us embarrassment that boundary between photo and painting is eliminated strangely and combined mysteriously. It doesn't look like painting or photograph and is felt extremely uncanny, In fact, it is clearly photograph.  But, it is slipped at different points from the authentication or explicitness of existing photographs and reproduction of an object-object. It supports appearance of landscape and plant.

The artist produced the photographs which look like traditional Korean landscape painting and Four Gracious Plant painting drawn with Chinese ink or light coloring. He installed camera at midnight and took the pictures by controlling the intensity and time of light using lighting equipments.  It is a strategy that neglects time and space of generalized photo mechanism. He took photographs by arranging the order of time and space as intended.  By doing so, he neglected the existing principle of taking pictures and asks a new question of time and space.  He also used QR code which reminds us of seal before print (the last process) and reflects information age on the image.  The products of this process look like seeing the traditional Korean landscape paintings or Four Gracious Plants paintings.

However, is it possible to draw traditional Korean landscape painting or Four Gracious Plants painting with photograph? Or is it possible to make the same feeling or atmosphere as traditional Korean landscape painting and Four Gracious Plants painting wit photograph? If it is possible, what does it mean?  It seems that he is to take photograph like 'Oriental Painting' through western machine.  It might be resulted from his seeking oriental or Korean photograph.

Today, the artists' recognition and interpretation of tradition are different from those of the past. They make use of free reference of origin (tradition) and its original translation instead of excessive thinking of identity of Korean art.  Thus, the text of traditional image serves as one of numerous texts which can be quoted and assembled at any time rather than having the authority of originality representing unique meaning.  These plural texts can be joined and borrowed freely by the artist.  As visual texts inherent in our culture are mixed with the contemporary texts, the work is reterritorialized into multidimensional space and its meaning is multiple.

Yoo Tae-Joon also used symbols of traditional Korean landscape painting and Four Gracious Plants painting (text called tradition) and distorted them subtly.  He chose and attracted it as being potential under tradition or community spirit of Korean people.  He inspires meditative atmosphere of harmony of light and shadow instead of geometrical projection or highlights the taste of Chinese ink with delicate black and white tone.  So he quoted the tradition of Korean landscape painting and Four Gracious Plants painting into his photographs.

His photos of pine trees, bamboo, Maehwa, stones, grass, etc. are to invoke 'memory of something' not to record a given subject.  He chose these things as the objects of stimulating his memories and gathering Korean history, culture, tradition and beauty together. These are materials and symbols which represent Korean nature.  However, it is also the world of pure composition by light.  He focuses on pure formation different from visible world through an act to dissolve Korean and traditional Four Gracious Plants painting into the vessel of modernism and his photographs keep extremely constructive and pictorial atmosphere in the recognition of light composition. Consequently, his photographs became ones like 'Soomukhwa (painting using Chinese ink)' showing the tone of delicate and rich black and white.

Four Gracious Plants painting means observing the life of four gracious plants and formulating and simplifying them.  Four gracious plants painting is the essence of the art having symbolism by the intellects in the Northeast Asia and reflects the Neo-confucianistic vision of the universe. The philosophy of all creation based on the idea of Yin and Yang is reflected on the world of four gracious plants as it is.

Unification between nature and human through art is a special feature of arts in northeast Asia.  But, four gracious plants painting fell in the 20th century because the gentry class which pursued the noble man collapsed and the world view of Neo-confucianism and Confucianism were also lost.  Four gracious plants painting was included in a part of painting in Joseon Art Exhibition in the age of Japanese imperialism and it was dissolved.

But, recently four gracious plants painting and traditional Korean landscape painting have been interpreted and borrowed again.  Their meaning and methodology have been questioned. Yoo Tae-Joon's photographs are tried in this context.  He expresses "an object with an image, inspires vitality to it and offers the freedom of emotion with sophisticated images though the border between the visible and the invisible, photo and Chinese ink, and contemporary and traditional paintings."  He also tries to start from doubt and reflection of the whole phenomena from his thinking and question between "photo and traditional painting' and its border.  The fruits of his efforts and reflection are just his photographs before us.

Artist's Note

This exhibition is my agony and question between photo and traditional painting (using Chinese ink).

My photo started from doubt and introspection of the whole phenomenon rooted in the Oriental thoughts and its border.

I worry about what is oriental, global and Korean while I do my photo work?

I have thought of what is most like mine and I really wanted to show what is something Korean most.

I really worry about how I show Oriental philosophy or idea.

My photos started from stylistic border of traditional painting represented by Korean painting like photography have hidden intention to delude viewers.

In other words, my photos make viewers experience and search for the concept of time and space and visual paradox.

The mechanism of photography has been used as a useful means to accept evidence because of its realistic character.

However, this photography work escapes from general photography method which takes a picture of an object as it is.

Therefore, I rearrange the concept of time and space on the screen of finder and express shade and light and joke on it.

In addition, I want to make you find visual irony and enjoy questions of visible and  invisible things and an object.

The etymological meaning of photography is 'painting drawn by light'.  Thus I want to express the expression method of traditional painting through the mechanism of camera.

Therefore, etymological meaning of 'Photograph' is extended more widely and I try to make visual arrangement and image as I intend and imagine.

I intend to arrange the order of time and space as intended and show photography work which expresses traditional painting through photography and neglects the arrangement of time and space.

As a result, I express the color sense of Chinese ink of ink-and-wash paintings using light, highlight the form of lines in traditional painting, and adopt the ink-and-wash painting style to show the essential characteristics of theme only.
