Coordinates of the Mind Presented with Colors and Forms

The things we call routines are bound to contain all kinds of stories of our daily lives. Some of them are engraved into our minds, and for some reason some of them will suddenly surface and disturb our thoughts.

Such things, small and large, that occur over time are the starting point at which Song Hyeonjin  creates her paintings, and is one of her routines. As mentioned in my review of her solo exhibition in 2012, her painting is a reflection or record of the thought she kept in her mind at the time when she created a work. However, this description is one from the perspective of the viewer, not from her, the painter.

Then, how would her works be described from her point of view? Her works may be said to be values of coordinates in the canvas space made up of two elements of color and form, or more that present an event (or the theme of the work). She intimately expresses on her painting or by act of painting the state of her mind and the feelings at the time of painting, although she expresses them only as much as she wanted to disclose.

In other words, her canvas is a system which adequately expresses or symbolizes her state of mind, situation or an event, and at the same time maintaining an equilibrium and tension that does not allow an assumption or association, in the midst of hiding and disclosing, within the balance of formative elements.

In this respect, it might be said that Song Hyeonjin’s works continuously seek to arrange a specific phase of mind in a proper distance between the artist herself and the other (or the viewer and the painter, or between two parties of the event). (Furthermore, it may be understood that all of her works might have been based on this concept.)

Then, what can we read from her works (coordinates) that are introduced between hiding and disclosing? It seems that we do not need to read the coordinate values or something from her canvas. In fact, there is no way to solve the equations because her works do not offer any parameters to do so. Song Hyeonjin does not wish to completely disclose this, and there is also no reason to do so anyway. It is her private story like a secret garden. Even though we do not try to find the values of the coordinates from her works, there are plenty of pleasure and plays in the colors, forms, brushstrokes, and lines in them. Thus, I would think we can be satisfied by simply sliding into the space of the coordinates and strolling around the emotions and feelings that she properly discloses.

Unlike the works in her earlier exhibitions, each painting in this exhibition might be titled. Even so, that does not mean that the approach to her works became easy, as the themes are still very allusive and abstract.

Compared with the works in her previous exhibitions, the works in this exhibition show more simplification in colors, forms, composition, and brushstrokes. In particular, we can find that the layers of the colors by multiple brushstrokes are very simplified (although some are still remain to a certain extent). Maintaining the equilibrium between the hiding and disclosing, expression and restraint, and other dualistic elements on the canvas, it seems that she has moved the pictorial and formative balance in her psychological landscape into the coordinates she desired. We can also hear the same from her own description, “Rather than an expression with freewheeling brushstrokes and colors, my character seems to fit neatly arranged colors.”

The happiest person from her painting would be none other than the painter herself. Even if the painter suffers from unforeseen processes and the results, the world in the painting must be the most comfortable shelter for her. In addition, painting would provide an experience allowing her to be unified with the world. Then, what coordinates will her painting eventually arrive at?
